MSM 90s: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Jay Burgess, Jamie Barrier, Natasha Nix

You know, my dear Muscle Shoals Meets family, life is a literal timeline. Time is no respecter of persons so it's like that for all of us -- we all have a timeline. Whereas my life's timeline is very different from yours, we all share a few life-changing monumental moments. Agreed?

Some of y'all remember where you were when JFK was shot and most of us surely recall when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on live television. I venture to say even the youngest amongst the MSM concert crowd can also recount their hour-by-hour movements on that fearful day ... Sept. 11, 2001.

Sometimes, I forget that not all monumental, life-changing (shared) moments are bad. Thank you, Muscle Shoals Meets, for reminding me what it felt like the first time I heard Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Raise your hand if this exhilarating, monumental, life-changing experience is also part of your life's timeline. I will never forget "Smells Like Teen Spirit" literally stopping me in my tracks; what about you? We should get together and swap Teen Spirit stories, y'all.

Listen, it's all fun and games until it's not, MSM fam. I've had months to sit with what happened that night back in August, friends, and performances 28, 29, and 30 still render speechless. The three-song sequence leading up to the grand finale of the Muscle Shoals Meets the 90s concert was brilliant and masterful storytelling via setlist. It was a much-needed goodbye and celebration of life for three of our gone-too-soon musical heroes.

I'm still reeling over the next-level perfection of the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" pairing. Seriously, MSM friends, I think I'm most struck by the generational representation in this third from last performance that Saturday night back in August. This lineup, dear MSM friends, was the 2026 Shoals version of a 90s supergroup.

Jay Burgess, Jamie Barrier, and Natasha Nix -- oh my gosh, y'all; does it get any better than having these three together on stage paying homage to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana? The answer is: No. There is no room to improve upon the perfection we all witnessed on the stage that night at Renaissance Shoals. You felt it, right? We were all on stage for this one, friends. It's called living vicariously.

Jay was literally right there in front of us embodying our beloved anti-hero. Jamie was hainting up the place with all his Kurt-like natural punk bravado. Then there was Natasha. Yes, Natasha. Our fierce every woman representing those of us whose punk rock fire is a little shy. I can't put into words how gratifying it was to have Jay, Jamie, and Natasha ripping through Teen Spirt. They did it just for me. Absolutely destroyed.

These final few performances ahead of the MSM 90s finale were touchy undertakings, y'all. These songs conjure all the monumental "life's too short" sort of feels for me. Like I said before, those Fiddleworms and friends are bold and courageous. Brave. Thank you, MSM, for always giving me what I want and gifting me what I need.

What a night! One I'll never forget.

Stay tuned. More to come.

Dig Worms.
