MSM 90s: Basket Case, Jamie Barrier

9/18/26

It's so cool how Muscle Shoals Meets has become our annual Shoals-wide family reunion. It’s good to slow down and take a step back from daily life, right? It’s so nice to come together and see familiar faces and it’s even nicer when high-quality live music is part of that scenario.

Muscle Shoals Meets is always a sold-out event – nine years running, friends. Selling out (in this case) is a great thing but it comes along with a sad truth: There’s just not a Shoals venue big enough to hold every single MSM fan. Hmmm. Wonder if the University of North Alabama’s new stadium – Bank Independent Stadium, to be more exact, with seating capacity of 10,000 – could be a future Muscle Shoals Meets concert venue? What’s the use of dreaming if you don’t dream big? Roar Lions, btw.

So, if you missed hanging out with 700 (plus) of your friends and neighbors at the Muscle Shoals Meets the 90s Saturday night concert at the Renaissance Shoals back in August, I’m here to report that our favorite resident Haint, Jamie Barrier, is still one cool cat, y’all.

Speaking of Jamie, I overheard the cutest exchange between this super cool flannel-clad Gen X couple next to me at the MSM 90s main show. It went something like this:

Guy: “Oh hey, I saw Jamie Barrier. What’s he up to these days?”

Girl: “Oh, same as always. Just touring the world with his band.”

Mercy, I love MSM. If you know me at all, you know I love those Pine Hill Haints, too. And, you guessed it, it’s Jamie’s turn in this play-by-play recollection of that magical MSM 90s summer night. Thinking back to this performance makes me grin like a silly schoolgirl. If ever there was an East Bay Southern Punk, Jamie's it, y'all. I’m thinking he’s the OG Alabama ghost music punk. Duh.

You know, I (mostly) love it when MSM surprises me and this fourth performance of set two was a little surprising to me. You'll never hear me complain about having too much Green Day in my life, but they were the only band to have two songs in the MSM 90s main show. Good job, Fiddleworms. I approve.

So, "Basket Case?" I see you, Fiddleworms. The thing about this song is, it hits on all cylinders right out of the gate. The energy is at 100 from that very first note/lyric. “Do you have the time to listen to me whine?” Boy, no. Just quit your whining – it’s bringing me down.

Green Day is a three piece, you know. So, witnessing this Haint Worms version was pretty face-melting. I couldn’t see for sure and I’m scouring socials to verify but help me out here, MSM friends … that was Mike Dillon banging the hell out of that beat, right? I think that was David MacKay on bass duties, too, and it sounded like Eddie Martin and Malcolm Singleton giving backup vocals.

You know that hypothetical icebreaker prompt: If you could have a meal with anyone, past or present, who would it be? The journalist in me can't stop thinking about how cool it would be to have Jamie Barrier, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Joe Strummer gathered around a table or belly up at a bar. Add Prince to the mix and that’s my final answer. What’s yours?

At the end of each MSM concert, we can't help ourselves, right? We start wondering what those fabulous Fiddleworms and friends will take on next. Listen, I know what my pops taught me about opinions but I'm gonna go ahead and put this out there: Next up for MSM, Green Day? I vote, “yes.”

Stay tuned. More to come.

Dig Worms.
