MSM 90s: You Oughta Know, Natasha Nix

You know what I love? I love how Muscle Shoals Meets helps keep me connected to our local music scene. Our beloved Fiddleworms and friends do such a great job of expanding the MSM circle but doing it with care. I love that, y'all.

I was a community journalist here in the Shoals for 20 years but I've been out of the game for almost a decade. I pride myself in trying to stay current with our rising superstars but I have MSM, and Scott Campbell specifically, to thank for firmly planting Natasha Nix on my radar. Thank you, guys, for adding her to the MSM circle a few years back.

The Muscle Shoals Meets the 90s main show was back-to-back-to-back showstopping, jaw-dropping performances. Remember? You know how sometimes you're caught up in the moment but you're also hyperaware of how a very cool big picture experience is unfolding, too? You know that feeling, right? That's how I felt the whole time Natasha was burning down the Renaissance Shoals with her rendition of Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know."

When Natasha took the stage that Saturday night back in August, her vibe preceded her. She was in full-on attack mode and descended on the stage with a vengeance. It was so perfect, y'all, and just thinking about it now gives me full body chills. Natasha threw down, MSM fam. It's just what she does and I am forever here for her fire.

Natasha's aura that night made me think of a method actor. She was fully immersed in the song, (Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know"!), before she even opened her mouth. I dare say: Natasha is a method performer, y'all. She's lived some life and she's seen some things and that's the essence of her art, dear friends. Natasha gives us everything she's got every single time.

If you weren't around in the 1990s or were living on a desert island or had your head in the sand and had no knowledge of this iconic Alanis banger, I swear you would've thought "You Oughta Know" was a Natasha original. Saying she "owned" the performance or "made the song her own" doesn't even come close to describing the powerful depth of Natasha's performance that night during Muscle Shoals Meets the 90s. Big fan, y'all. Huge.

Listen, not every person is equipped to sing every song. I honestly believe it has nothing to do with skill level, God-given talent, or even age. Doing a song justice and giving a next level performance is all about the soul, friends. Natasha's soul doesn't play, y'all. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Stay tuned. More to come.

Dig Worms.
