MSM Three Questions: Clint Bailey

Ahead of tonight's jam band portion of Muscle Shoals Meets the 90s Mixtape Week at On The Rocks, how about we play MSM Three Questions with the Fiddleworms' own, Clint Bailey?
1. Why? That's it, that's question one: Why do you participate in MSM shows? They're a lot of work -- why is it worth it? Seriously. Canned response not allowed.
Clint: I participate for many reasons, but primarily this:
a) The gig helps pay my bills. I love to play music and I always will no matter what, but I prefer to be fairly reimbursed and Russell has always made sure that, while MSM is a noble charity effort, local artists are paid fairly for the sizable work they put into these shows.
b) Learning new music, even some that might be outside my comfort zone, is a welcome challenge that every musician should subject themselves to. It keeps me on my toes and ensures that my chops are up to speed. I will never stop learning how to be a better player, and these shows are a tremendous exercise in musical training.
c) I have played in this band for twenty years. It’s been too much fun to stop now!
2. Of the songs that you're working on for Mixtape Week, what are YOU looking forward to and why?
Clint: I’m appearing on two mixtape shows, so I’ll pick from the Jam Band show, since I’m somewhat leading that one: Black Crowes, "Thorn In My Pride."
I selected that tune for a couple of reasons. First, it’s one of my all time favorite songs by BC. Musically and lyrically, it’s top notch. I first heard it when I was around 21 or so and immediately sat down to learn Eddie Harsch’s phenomenal piano and organ parts. It’s a song that I bonded with several close musician friends over, so the song has a great deal of personal history and meaning for me.
3. MSM is such a collaborative, encouraging, joyful family -- who would you like to thank and why?
Clint: I’d like to thank Russell Mefford for being the head maestro for all these shows over the years. He works tirelessly to ensure every year is an incredible experience for a fantastic cause. I’d like to thank the countless gifted musicians, stage workers, and everyone involved in these shows. It truly takes a village. Finally, I’ll thank my incredible girlfriend Jenae for supporting and encouraging all my crazy endeavors—musical or otherwise!
